Lahey Hospital and Medical Center has announced the establishment of an endowed Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine, in honor of Dr. Sidney Alexander, chairman Emeritus of Lahey Health’s Cardiovascular Division and Newton resident.
Dr. Frederic Resnic has been named as the inaugural Sidney Alexander, M.D. Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine.
The hospital has established a $2 million endowment, which will fund the chair permanently to advance cardiovascular research and physician education, continuing Alexander’s legacy. The Sidney Alexander Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine will provide an enduring source of funds to recruit and train exceptional cardiologists who exemplify the highest standards of personalized patient care and a passion for teaching and learning.
Alexander joined Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, formerly known as Lahey Clinic, in 1963 and was one of the earliest proponents and educators of preventive cardiology in Boston. He received his undergraduate degree in 1953 from Wesleyan University and his medical degree from Harvard University in 1957. He served his residency at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, now Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and did cardiology research at the Harvard School of Public Health. During his tenure at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, he has brought distinction to the organization as an author, an educator, an exceptional physician and a pioneer in the field of cardiology.
Alexander is a founding member, past president and a board member of Physicians for Social Responsibility, an organization established in 1961 at the height of the Cold War to define the medical consequences of a possible nuclear war. He is also a member of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, and represented PSR, its American affiliate, when this organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985.
